For fighters scaling the mixed martial arts ladder, there can be no better forum than an Ultimate Fighting Championship main event. Cue heavyweights Travis Browne and Antonio Silva.

Browne checked in at 246 pounds for his five-round showdown with Silva (266) in the UFC on FX 5 headliner on Friday at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The six other men answering the call to main-card duty, including welterweight co-headliners Jake Ellenberger (170) and Jay Hieron (170), also met their contracted weight requirements without incident at Thursday’s official weigh-in.

A Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts export, Browne will enter the cage on a three-fight winning streak. The 30-year-old Hawaiian last appeared at UFC 145 in April, when he submitted Chad Griggs with a first-round arm-triangle choke at Philips Arena in Atlanta. Browne has compiled a 4-0-1 mark in the UFC, an October 2010 draw with French kickboxer Cheick Kongo the lone blemish.

Silva does not have momentum on his side, having suffered consecutive defeats for the first time in his career. The 33-year-old former EliteXC champion made his promotional debut at UFC 146 in May, only to be carved up by Cain Velasquez ground-and-pound in a one-sided technical knockout loss in Las Vegas. “Bigfoot” owns wins over Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko, the American Kickboxing Academy’s Mike Kyle and former UFC heavyweight titleholders Andrei Arlovski and Ricco Rodriguez.

UFC on FX 5 “Browne vs. Bigfoot” -- which airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the FX network -- will also feature a pivotal flyweight duel pitting “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 14 winner John Dodson (126) against former Tachi Palace Fights champion Jussier da Silva (126) and a welterweight showcase matching the well-traveled Josh Neer (171) with Justin Edwards (170).

Three hours prior, Fuel TV will carry six preliminary bouts: Jeremy Stephens (156) vs. Yves Edwards (156), Michael Johnson (156) vs. Danny Castillo (156), Jacob Volkmann (155) vs. Shane Roller (156), Bart Palaszewski (*146) vs. Diego Nunes (146) Darren Uyenoyama (125) vs. Phil Harris (125) and Marcus LeVesseur (156) vs. Carlo Prater (156). The remaining undercard match will stream live to the UFC’s Facebook page at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, as Mike Pierce (171) locks horns with Aaron Simpson (171).

According to a report on Fuel TV, the Dennis Hallman-Thiago Tavares fight was scrapped after it was determined Hallman would not make weight prior to the official weigh-ins. According to the network, Hallman, who has had issues hitting his contracted mark in the past, was off the lightweight limit by seven pounds.
