“The Answer”
CASE FOR: During an era in which fighters regularly cut huge amounts of weight to get into lighter weight classes, Edgar took a different path. Fighting close to his natural weight, Edgar was undersized and yet still beat a who’s who in the toughest division in the sport. His wins over B.J. Penn in 2010 ended “The Prodigy’s” run as the greatest lighter weight fighter in the world, and his comebacks against Gray Maynard are among the most impressive displays of heart in MMA history. Plus, he might still be UFC lightweight champion with a little judging luck against Benson Henderson. CASE AGAINST: Edgar’s career is still relatively young. Three straight losses removed him from the immediate title picture at 145 and 155 pounds. Despite his fighting spirit, Edgar has never proven to be a drawing card, and interest in the lightweight division declined significantly when he unseated Penn. VERDICT: Should he go in? Yes, even at this point.
