Lyoto Machida's Blogs

  • Jake Mooney Joins Press Row By: Jordan Breen

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by Dylan Thomas Prize shortlisted poet Jake Mooney.

Following the UFC on Fox 4, Breen and Mooney discuss the seeming decline of Mauricio Rua and consider his family past, grueling wars and the fact that the former UFC light heavyweight champion is still only 30 years old. The two also discuss Lyoto Machida as a foil for Jon Jones, how a rubber match with Rua would unfold, and how Machida has shed his rep as a boring fighter in favor of that of a bonafide knockout artist.

The two also discuss the best ways to watch MMA events, the experience of watching UFC events with Buddhist monks, MMA fan behavior and poor MMA literature.

  • Lawal: Machida Was Working Game Plan Against Jones, But Gassed By: Sherdog.com Staff

Muhammed Lawal, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing Lyoto Machida’s performance against Jon Jones (Lawal helped Machida train for the bout):

“Everything that I thought Lyoto could do, he did. Granted, some things happened before the fight that I can’t speak of. Only Lyoto could tell you about that, but I think first round, he did a great job. Second round, he was kind of gassed. Everything we worked on, pretty much, in Brazil, [in] the first round he did perfectly. Perfectly. Stopped the takedowns, was getting out of the clinch. Other things that I’m not going to say, but things that we worked on, worked perfectly.”

  • Jackson: Jones Has to Watch Machida’s Speed, Power By: Sherdog.com Staff

Greg Jackson, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing how Jon Jones matches up with Lyoto Machida:

“We’re going to have to watch Machida’s speed, and his distancing is key. He’s also a very creative fighter. He’s very quick on the in and out. He’s going to try to get past Jon’s length, I’m sure, with his jumping in and jumping out style and moving side to side. We have to be extremely careful with that. He does have one-punch power, so we need to be careful of his power. He’ll be very motivated because once somebody supposedly has that stature that Jon has now of this invincible machine, everybody trains really, really hard -- partly out of fear, partly out of ambition -- to take you down. I fully expect us to fight the best Machida that has ever fought, and hopefully we’ll be able to get around that and those problems.”

  • Coach: X-Gym Doors Always Open to Machida By: Marcelo Alonso

Lyoto Machida will face the most difficult test of his career when he challenges Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship in the UFC 140 main event on Dec. 10 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. He plans to train with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in Belem, Brazil, and, according to a recent interview with Sherdog.com, his former coach at the X-Gym, Josuel Distak, will keep the doors open for him in Rio de Janeiro, as well:

“As a fan, I’m cheering for Lyoto. I saw his MMA debut, and I’ve been following him ever since. In my opinion, the best sparring partner for him is Anderson, who has pretty similar features to Jones. The X-Gym doors will always be open for him, and he will have a good support system here, with guys like [former Strikeforce champions] Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ [Souza] and Rafael ‘Feijao’ [Cavalcante].”

  • Forum Threads of the Week By: Luca Fury

Saturday night’s UFC 136 card is stacked; from top to bottom, it’s easily one of the best cards of the year. As such, it dominated discussion this week in the Sherdog forums. Also, a popular talking point was the recently announced UFC 140 main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida.

    UFC 136’s Best Fight
UFC 136 is truly is a fantastic card. With so many great matchups, it’s hard to pick out the best one, but fans have taken up the task here. What fight are you most looking forward to?

    Debate: Edgar vs. Maynard
The main event of UFC 136 features the third fight between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard. The title contest will hopefully settle the score between the two evenly matched 155 pounders and reveal who the true No. 1 lightweight in the world is. Fans discuss their thoughts on the highly competitive matchup in this thread.

UFC 136 Matchup: Aldo vs. Florian
The co-main event of tonight’s big UFC event is a featherweight title tilt between dominant champion Jose Aldo and challenger Kenny Florian. While Aldo has successfully defended his title multiple times, he'll be facing arguably his toughest test to date in Florian. You can vote on a poll and share your thoughts right here.

    The Return of Sonnen
Also on tonight's card is a bout between the outspoken Chael Sonnen and former Marine Brian Stann. It’s a classic striker versus grappler matchup to determine the next challenger for UFC middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva. Head on over to this thread to voice your opinion on the matchup.

    Megabout: Jones vs. Machida
Lyoto Machida probably has the most interesting style to combat Jon Jones, and luckily for fans, the two light heavyweight standouts will meet in the Octagon at UFC 140. While Jones has been dominant, Machida poses by far the toughest stylistic test for the youngest champion in UFC history. It’s a tough fight to call, but you can give your pick here.

  • Machida: Pressure is on Jon Jones By: Marcelo Alonso

Lyoto Machida (Pictured), on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in a recent Sherdog.com interview:

“I had the belt and lost it. We know it’s all about momentum. You can’t analyze only the fighter; you have to analyze the human being, too. Jones is in a new setting, as he is the champion now. Everything gets bigger: media calls, responsibility, pressure. Every fight becomes a mountain to climb. You get pressured. Your oxygen gets low. Everything intensifies. To have good performances in normal situations is one thing; to be great when you’re champion is completely different. Opponents are studying him more, everybody is looking for a weakness and he has a target on his back. Let’s see how he does against Rampage, and then I’ll think about him. I don’t want to be concerned with a challenge that isn’t mine. I’ll do that only when it becomes a reality.”
