In the last year, New England mixed martial arts has established itself in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Tyson Chartier, the coach and manager for several of those, talked with Sherdog about the region’s recent successes and looked back on coaching Calvin Kattar, against Zabit Magomedsharipov in Moscow at UFC Fight Night 163.

Kattar and Magomedsharipov’s bout inside CSKA Arena was a highly competitive affair that saw the Russian score the unanimous decision win. As the lead coach for “The Boston Finisher,” Chartier feels his charge executed the plan to a tee in the final round. However, while adjusting to unexpected tactics by Magomedsharipov, the first two rounds did not go as expected.

“Pretty much how we fought in the third round, was really what we wanted him [to do],” Chartier told Sherdog. “We wanted him to own the cage. Put volume at [Magomedsharipov]. Wear him down [and] keep him on the warning track. Cut him off with our foot work, and land punches. And he did that. The big thing going into it was, we can’t let this kid take us down. We have to protect our lead leg. He checked every leg kick. He defended that single leg shot. From all the defensive elements that we were concerned on how Zabit beats everyone else; we took those away. We forced him to beat us in ways he hasn’t beat other people. He came forward, he pressured us, and he brought volume. I think that surprised us a little bit, because we’ve never really seen that out of him.”

Along with breaking down the results of the bout between Kattar and Magomedsharipov, Chartier also touched on Rob Font, another fighter he has trained and managed for many years, and who competes against Ricky Simon on Dec. 7 at UFC on ESPN 7. Conversation also included his thoughts on other New England based talents in the UFC, such as Randy Costa, Yorgan De Castro and Joe Lauzon. Advertisement
