With an eight-fight winning streak intact, Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight Leon Edwards has a plethora of options for his next opponent. The man currently sitting at No. 3 in the division’s rankings would prefer a title fight next. However, if that does not happen, he is open to other two options. A match-up with BMF champ and rival Jorge Masvidal, or a bout with the class’ top contender in Gilbert Burns. Although, the Englishman only sees value in a fight with “Durinho” under one condition.
“I prefer Masvidal. He’s the bigger name [and] bigger fight,” Edwards told Sherdog. “We’ve got history together, so that’s probably the fight I’ll push for. But if they come to me with Gilbert, and say ‘if you fight with Gilbert, you’ll fight for the title,’ then I’ll consider it. But if it’s Gilbert, but [the promotion says] ‘we don’t know whether or not you’re getting the title shot,’ then I wouldn’t even consider it.”
In his discussion with Sherdog, “Rocky” gave his thoughts on several other suggestions for future opponents, including former interim champion Colby Covington and two-time contender Stephen Thompson. Edwards also talked about his recent war of words with Burns on Twitter and ESPN analyst Ariel Helwani’s comments that the Brit is deserving of a title shot.
