Gina Mazany: Rediscovering ‘The Love for the Sport’

Gina Mazany’s 2020 campaign started with finding out that her services were no longer required by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The release was a gut punch to her confidence. However, within days, she was competing again and had made her way back to the win column. Five months later and on approach to her return to the promotion, “Danger” believes she has taken her game to new levels and cites a renewed love for the sport as the source of her growth.

“I’ve been in uncomfortable situations in the sense that I’m 31 years old and two weeks ago, I wasn’t signed with the UFC. I wasn’t signed with anybody,” Mazany told Sherdog.com. “I had no idea what future I was leading, but I just knew in my heart … I felt [there was] something more. The goals stayed the same. I just kind of kept on track. Having the uncertainty of not knowing what’s going to happen, I think it’s helped my growth quite a bit. I feel like I am putting a lot of things together because I’m not putting as much pressure on myself. I’m just having fun with my friends. You know what I mean? I f---ing love fighting. I love this s---. I feel like I’ve gotten back the love for the sport. It’s such an unforgiving sport. Anything can happen.”

In this exclusive interview with Sherdog, Mazany discussed her showdown with Julia Avila at UFC Fight Night 172 this Saturday in Las Vegas, revealed why she enjoys being the biggest underdog on the card, provided her thoughts on boyfriend Tim Elliott’s current losing streak and talked about her work in professional wrestling.
