In case anyone forgot, Khamzat Chimaev offered an emphatic reminder of his abilities at UFC 308.
The Chechen-born Swede made an impressive return to the Octagon, submitting former champion Robert Whittaker with a brutal first-round face crank in Saturday’s co-main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. By making short work of an opponent who was expected to be his toughest test to date, Chimaev sends a message to the rest of the middleweight division and climbs to No. 2 in Sherdog’s latest 185-pound poll. Don’t be surprised if he jumps the line to challenge for championship gold in his next promotional appearance.

In other UFC 308 action, Magomed Ankalaev kept on winning, taking a unanimous verdict against Aleksandar Rakic in a pivotal light heavyweight affair. While it wasn’t a spectacular performance from the Dagestani, his 13-bout unbeaten streak in the UFC is difficult to ignore. He climbs to No. 2 at 205 pounds, and perhaps a future date with reigning champion Alex Pereira awaits.
Finally, Lerone Murphy weathered a rough first round to keep his unbeaten record intact with a hard-fought unanimous verdict over Dan Ige. The Brit climbs to No. 12 in the featherweight rankings, but he’ll have to get off to faster starts if he hopes to surpass the division’s elite in future matchups.
