Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings

Making the Leap

While Yair Rodriguez’s path to a title may have been fortuitous, the performance that claimed championship gold was certainly not.

The Mexican star put together arguably the best outing of his career to date, as he overwhelmed Josh Emmett en route to a second-round submission victory in the UFC 284 co-headliner on Saturday night in Perth, Australia. With the win, “El Pantera” claims interim gold and presumably sets up a future clash with reigning 145-pound king Alexander Volkanovski, who came up just short in his bid to become a two-division champ in the main event. On the strength of his latest effort, Rodriguez climbs from sixth to fourth in Sherdog’s divisional rankings, while Emmett falls behind surging contender Arnold Allen to seventh.
