Controversy Rages

While the Vaseline controversy rages, Georges St. Pierre remains the king of the 170-pound world.

With his Jan. 31 blowout of B.J. Penn, the 27-year-old Canadian further blossomed as a superstar. Better yet, St. Pierre's muscle as a marquee headliner will be on display prominently later this year when he meets another pound-for-pound quality opponent in Thiago Alves.

"Rush" was not the only welterweight at work on the Jan. 31 UFC 94 bill. Jon Fitch rebounded soundly from his brutal summer loss at the hands of the champ to take a thoroughly dominating decision over Akihiro Gono. Another former St. Pierre opponent, Karo Parisyan, was much less impressive against South Korea's Dong Hyun Kim, but he still managed to grab a win that was crucial to keep pace in the division.

But perhaps the most brilliant performance of the evening belonged to Lyoto Machida, who pushed his record to 14-0 with his most assertive and brutal showing in the Octagon thus far. After his starching of Thiago Silva, Machida's UFC title hopes now hinge on the March 7 Quinton Jackson-Keith Jardine showdown at UFC 96.
