WSOF 14: Inaugural Heavyweight Championship Bout Added To Fight Card
Sep 16, 2014 Comments
(PRESS RELEASE) -- LAS VEGAS — World Series of Fighting’s return to
Canadian soil just became more of a must-see event as the
organization is excited to announce the entire fight card for the
live NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) televised event at the EXPO Centre
in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Saturday, Oct. 11, including the
inaugural World Series of Fighting heavyweight championship bout
and co-main event between fast-rising stars Smealinho
Rama (8-1) of Calgary, Alberta Canada and Derrick
Mehmen (18-5) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
In the highly-anticipated main event, superstars Jake Shields (29-7-1) of San Francisco, Calif. and Ryan “The Real Deal” Ford (22-4) of Edmonton will square off in a welterweight (170 pounds) matchup.
Riding a two-fight winning streak, the 22-year-old Canadian Rama
halted the unbeaten run of standout grappler Steve Mocco
in his World Series of Fighting Canada debut in February. “The
Prince” has earned seven finishes in eight victories thus far in
his promising career, all of them inside the first round of
action.
Representing American Top Team, Mehman has posted six consecutive victories to earn this championship opportunity, the last three coming inside the World Series of Fighting decagon. After scoring a memorable, second-round KO win over Rolles Gracie in his promotional debut, the 29-year-old reeled off back-to-back, unanimous decision wins over Scott Barrett and Dave Huckaba to secure his place opposite Rama in this historic heavyweight tilt.
A pro for nearly a decade, the 26-year-old Horodecki has won two of his last three starts and proudly carries the Team Tompkins name into battle against Huete, a winner of three straight, with all six of his career wins by having come by (T)KO or submission.
Cirkunov is an elite grappler and national judo and wrestling champion who has established himself as someone to watch in the light heavyweight division. Making his World Series of Fighting debut, Holder has scored seven first-round KO finishes in his eight career victories.
In preliminary card action, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and hometown favorite Luke Harris (10-2) of Edmonton will be looking to add another submission win to his resume when he faces hard-hitting road warrior Jared Hamman (13-6) of Denver, Colo. at light heavyweight. Harris has won 10 of his last 11 fights, all remarkably by first-round submission.
The live NBCSN telecast of the four-fight World Series of Fighting 14: “U.S. vs. Canada” main card begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
