Phillips vs. Evans at Shark Fight 9
Mar 4, 2010
(PRESS RELEASE) -- March 4, 2010 – Will there be a new reigning
king in the Shark Fight featherweight division? Fans will soon find
out. Texas based mixed martial arts fight promotion company, Shark
Fight Promotions, recently announced that current Shark Fight
Featherweight Champion, Douglas Evans, will face "Team Tompkins"
fighter Dustin Phillips at Shark Fights 9. This will be Evans first
title defense since claiming the title in July. Shark Fight 9 will
take place on Saturday, March 20th at the Amarillo Civic Center
Coliseum.
Douglas Evans (8-6) claimed the Shark Fight Featherweight title at Shark Fight 5.5 after defeating Douglas Frey. Evans, a UFC and EliteXC veteran, has been nominated for “Fight of the Year” not once, but twice. His challenger, Dustin Phillips, has won six of his last seven bouts, including victories over Gabe Rivas and Jorge Molina-Ramirez. Phillips, who boasts a very diverse athletic background, advanced to the 2004 U.S. Olympic trials in power lifting as an alternate and currently holds a compelling MMA record of 11-3.
Shark Fight President Brent Medley had this to say, “It is always
great to be back in Amarillo and we have a stellar line up for this
event. Fans can expect a very exciting night of fights. The main
event title fight between Phillips and Evans is an extremely
compelling match up.”
In the Co-Main event of the night, hometown hero, Marcus "Money" Sursa (6-5) is ready to make a comeback from his first round loss to Shark Fights Light Heavyweight Champion, Trevor Prangley. Sursa will face Ultimate Fighter 8 finalist and Gracie (Humaitá) Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Vinicius "Pezao" Magalhaes (4-4-0-1NC). Magalhaes, a three time World Jiu Jitsu champion, is looking to make a comeback of his own.
According to Medley, “Sursa has a huge fan following here in Amarillo and has the charisma and talent to become a bona fide MMA super star. On March 20th, Sursa definitely has his work cut out for him. He has a very tough opponent in Magalhaes, who has his sights set on making a comeback in the UFC. Both fighters are fierce contenders. The fans will not be disappointed.”
