ONE ON ONE WITH BRANDON GAITOR

Sep 01, 2015

(PRESS RELEASE) -- On September 5, lightweight champion, Brandon Gaitor, will put his belt on the line against Charlie Alexander from Nashville MMA. Gaitor is currently 6-1 and trains at the UFC Gym in Cordova, TN. He won the title back in November of 2014 and displays a good all around game. He has shown dominance both on his feet and on the ground.

Standing in Gaitor’s way on September 5 is a very dangerous opponent in Charlie Alexander. Gaitor weighed in on this upcoming title defense and his opponent.

How did you get started in MMA?

My interest in MMA was originally inspired by my father who was a martial artist inspired by Bruce Lee, the father of MMA. Plus my father was in a special operations unit of the military, so hand to hand combat was a common pastime in my household. In the 90s, my dad collected videos of MMA competitions for us to study and soon enough I was gathering kids in the neighborhood to compete in our own unsanctioned versions of what I saw on the screen. My senior year in high school I wrestled under coach Ronnie Bray, who had scouted me since 7th grade, but my mom didn't allow me to participate, by my senior year she couldn't stop me. Coach Bray showed me the potential of my natural abilities and told me that I hit the genetic lottery when it came the athleticism and aptitude. I did about a summers worth of training with Dave Ferguson after being recruited from a wrestling competition to visit his gym, once I saw guys that loved to fight I was hooked! Summer came and went and I left Memphis to study at UT Knox. I became involved in unsanctioned bouts around town, and was building a name without any significant training. My last unsanctioned bout was in 2008 and from then I focused on graduating. Fast forward to 2014 I saw a UFC gym in a shopping plaza and couldn't help but go inside and see what was going on. Little did I know they had just opened and I became their very first member. The rest is history!

What are your thoughts on this upcoming fight and your opponent, Charlie Alexander?

My opponent for this match is no different to me than any other guy who steps in that cage with me. With all due respect, I consider them necessary steps toward my destiny. I have lucid dreams of my fists crushing the bones in his face, my knees splintering ribs in his chest as the fans roar for more. It's quite beautiful to me really; the balance between primal instinct and modern sophistication. Life is a stage and he too will play his part and fall on September 5. I think I will overwhelm him. He has yet to face an opponent with a fraction of my speed, strength and natural ability.

Where do you feel you have the advantage in this fight?

I think my advantage is something that can't be measured, only seen, felt and respected. Likewise, my respect for him and any one who commits to this sport could not be greater. I recognize his own greatness without compromising my own. This is the way of a gladiator.

Anything you want to say to your opponent?

If I could say anything to him it would be the same that I would say to myself. A Bruce Lee quote I carry with me into each fight..."Forget about winning and losing; forget about pride and pain. Let your opponent graze your skin and you smash into his flesh, let him smash into your flesh and you fracture his bones; let him fracture your bones and you take his life! Do not be concerned with escaping safely- lay your life before him (me)." This is the way of a gladiator.

I know you have one loss on your record and that is to Luis Pena. Would you like to get another shot at him?

Yeah! I want another shot at Pena. How about a pro bout though? I'm sure he would appreciate that. My only defeat was a fluke of events, which caused me to take an exhibition match at 3 hours notice. But honestly, that upset was the catalyst for the beast you will see in the cage come Sept 5.

Anything else you would like to add before we go?

If he isn't ready to lay his life before me then back out now. Give the people what they want… blood, war, and competition.
