New stars emerge at MFC 41

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Three top contenders emerged from the Maximum Fighting Championship’s thrilling MFC 41: All In card emanating from a packed Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday night.

Topping the AXS TV Fights lineup, Shane Campbell survived a fireworks-filled first round against Marcus Edwards and notched a TKO win 29 seconds into Round 2 of a superfight title eliminator.

Campbell (10-2) avoided a number of takedown attempts from Edwards (9-3) in the opening stanza before the duo began blasting each other with a wild exchange of strikes. Both fighters were rattled in the exchanges but yet both stepped lively into the second round. However, Edwards suffered an apparent knee injury moments into the second and Campbell pounced with a barrage of ground strikes that led referee John Braak to finally step in.

With the victory, Campbell earned a shot at the vacant MFC welterweight title early in 2015.

In the co-main event, Jeremy Osheim (6-0) proved every bit the highly touted prospect as he crushed former MFC light-heavyweight champ Victor Valimaki with a series of vicious knee strikes that resulted in a TKO stoppage just 1:04 into their battle. Osheim, who is trained by popular mixed martial arts figure Thomas Denny, backed Valimaki (18-9) into a corner and used his 81’’ reach to bring him into his punishing knees. Valimaki dropped after the fourth straight unblocked knee and referee Vern Gorman jumped in to end the bout.

The Knockout of the Night win boosted Osheim into the No. 1 spot in the MFC’s 205-pound division.

The Submission of the Night honor went to slick specialist Andrew McInnes (5-1) who became the first fighter to submit Ryan Healy (25-14-1) as he finished the veteran with a rear-naked choke only 2:49 into a spirited affair. McInnes ignited his hometown fans by first trading punches with the rugged Healy and then climbing aboard Healy’s back against the ropes. McInnes sunk in the choke, forced Healy to the mat, and coaxed the tapout.

McInnes immediately called out reigning MFC lightweight champ Tom Gallicchio, and the pair will meet January 23rd at MFC 42 with the belt on the line.

A bantamweight brawl was the unequivocal Fight of the Night as MFC newcomer Kyle Oliveira clashed with hometowner Corey Gower.

Oliveira punished Gower’s leg with kicks and mixed in a wicked array of punches that had Gower bruised and battered through two rounds. But “The Hatchet” brought everything he had in the third, busting Oliveira up as the two eventually were spraying blood all over the ring. In the end, Oliveira (3-1) took a unanimous decision from Gower (5-3) with two judges voting 29-28 and the other bizarrely scoring it 30-27.

The main card was opened with another bantamweight encounter as Oliveira’s teammate Brad Katona (1-0) put his striking talents to good use, felling Mike Hay (1-1) with a vicious punch to the liver and registering the TKO victory at 2:27 in the opening round.

Other results:

Miles Anstead (6-0) def. Jared McComb (7-4-1) – unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)

Christopher Boisvert (3-3) def. Nick Hrabec (2-1) – TKO, 1:11 Round 1

Graham Park (3-1) def. Justin Schmit (2-2) – tapout via rear-naked choke, 3:20 Round 1
