Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) will put his WBA welterweight title on the line in the main event of a boxing card on Fox and he’s expecting a win over Lopez will help catapult him into becoming a household name. One of the best all-around fighters in the sport of boxing, “One Time” is aiming to keep his unbeaten record in tact against one of the toughest hombres in the sport.
Thurman has turned away all comers thus far in his career and he’s beaten some top-flight competition. The Floridian holds wins over the likes of Shawn Porter, Robert Guerrero, Julio Diaz and Jesus Soto Karass; he most recently bested previously-unbeaten Danny Garcia on points last March. On Friday, Thurman tipped the scale at 146.5 pounds.
Lopez (36-7, 19 KOs) snatched up a few regional titles but has yet to win a world championship in the sweet science. While he’s gotten the better of plenty of solid foes, “The Riverside Rocky” has come up short in his biggest fights; Andre Berto, Marcos Maidana, Jessie Vargas and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez all have wins over him. Lopez, who weighed in at 146.5 pounds as well, is hoping his luck changes on Saturday.
The action takes place inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, and will begin at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Fox.
