Jamie Bates Dominates Richard Abraham in Glory SuperFight Series Main Event
Glory newcomer Jamie Bates made good on his promise to win in his
promotional debut as he dominated American brawler Richard Abraham
for three rounds. Their encounter was the featured fight of the
Glory 40 SuperFight Series undercard in Copenhagen, Denamrk, which
was loaded with terrific action.
Bates (24-6, 3 KOs) never hurt Abraham in the contest, but his elusiveness and accurate counter striking kept the Chicago-area fighter at bay. Bates’s movement prevented Abraham from getting into a rhythm and reduced him to throwing almost single punches exclusively. Abraham (11-5, 4 KOs) came alive late in the third as he pressed the British contender into the ropes, but his effort to swarm him wasn’t enough as all five ringside judges favored Bates. The official scores were 30-27 (four times) and 29-28.
Fighting with a heavy heart and dedicating his battle to his
recently-passed father, longtime veteran Mohammed El-Mir survived
getting rocked in the first to beat up Norway’s Simon Santana.
El-Mir, who was born in Palestine but grew up in Denmark, pressured
his featherweight foe throughout and had two knockdowns ruled as
slips in the second. Santana (27-11-1, 6 KOs) faded down the
stretch but he stood toe-to-toe with “Desert Storm” for the final
20 seconds of the fight, though his late surge wasn’t enough. All
five judges favored El-Mir 29-28, to bolster his pro ledger to
114-23 with 33 KOs.
Light heavyweight Freddy Kemayo (68-23-1, 47 KOs) proved to be too experienced for the young, brash Imad Hadar as he stopped him in the second. Hadar (19-1, 7 KOs) came out wild and reckless and though he won the opening frame, “Crazy Horse” eventually figured out his attacks and picked him apart. A counter left hook dropped an off-balance Hadar at the midway point of the second and then Kemayo forced him to his knees with a vicious body attack shortly thereafter. “The Problem Child” climbed back to his feet at the count of nine, but referee Paul Nicols had seen enough and waived it off at the 2:21 mark.
Canada’s Josh Jauncey said he would knockout Spain’s Antonio Gomez and he did, but his second-round stoppage wasn’t the sort of win he expected. Jauncey had staggered his foe with kicks and punches to the head and body, but a well-timed knee to the chin is what sealed Gomez’ fate. The knee sliced open a nasty gash on Gomez’ chin and with blood pouring down his body, the ringside doctors opted to intervene. The fight came to an end just 65 seconds into the stanza.
In the opening bout of the Glory 40 SuperFight Series card, China’s Yuhang Xie knocked Chris Mauceri down in the first and coasted to a rather easy unanimous decision win. The official scores favored Xie 29-27 and 30-26 (four times).
