Del Rosario in Car Accident, Will Not Fight Cormier June 18

Undefeated Strikeforce heavyweight Shane del Rosario (Pictured; file photo) has withdrawn from his June 18 bout against Daniel Cormier after being involved in a car accident.

Few details are known about the accident at this point, but Sherdog.com confirmed with a source close to the situation that the heavyweight will likely not compete at Strikeforce “Overeem vs. Werdum” in Dallas. MMAJunkie.com first reported the news on Friday.

Though a lightweight bout between K.J. Noons and Jorge Masvidal has been rumored to replace the scrapped heavyweight tilt on the event’s main card, there has been no word from the promotion regarding the fight.

Del Rosario was last seen running through fellow heavyweight prospect Lavar Johnson at Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Silva” in February. The Team Oyama representative is a veteran of both EliteXC and M-1 competition and holds a perfect 3-0 record inside the Strikeforce cage. Del Rosario, 27, has finished all 11 of his foes, earning eight of those victories by knockout.

Like Del Rosario, Cormier has yet to taste defeat as a professional. The current King of the Cage heavyweight titleholder has racked up four wins in Strikeforce competition, most recently outwrestling Devin Cole en route to a unanimous decision victory at Strikeforce Challengers 13 in January. A former United States Olympian in freestyle wrestling, Cormier has finished all but one of his opponents since beginning his fighting career in 2009.
