Chael Sonnen Wants Wanderlei Silva at UFC 167; Dana White Game if Wand is Healthy

Chael Sonnen is still gunning for a match with Wanderlei Silva, and he has now requested a date and time for his proposed meeting with “The Axe Murderer.”

During a taped Wednesday night segment on “Fox Sports Live,” the former three-time UFC title challenger asked Dana White to book him against Silva this coming November as the co-main event of UFC 167.

"Dana, it is no secret that I am the biggest draw and the highest paid athlete in the UFC, and the only person who comes close to rivaling me is Georges St-Pierre," Sonnen said. "As I see it, in November, when he takes on Johny Hendricks live in Las Vegas -- tickets on sale now -- he does not have a co-main event. I ask that you put me and Wanderlei Silva on that card."

UFC 167 takes place Nov. 16 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and airs live on pay-per-view. In addition to the headliner, the bill has also received another pivotal welterweight clash between Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler.

As for Sonnen’s request, White was open to the idea of “The American Gangster” squaring off with the former Pride Fighting Championships 205-pound ruler, provided Silva is not injured.

"We can do that fight. The question, I think, is Wanderlei Silva is out until the beginning of the year,” said White. “ I'm not sure if he's healthy. But if he's healthy, I will definitely make that fight, and I will definitely make it the co-main event."

Sonnen recently bested Silva’s former Chute Boxe teammate and longtime friend Mauricio Rua, submitting “Shogun” with a first-round guillotine choke in the UFC Fight Night 26 main event. Prior to that Aug. 17 triumph, the 36-year-old had lost back-to-back title fights, falling to former middleweight champion Anderson Silva last year before suffering a first-round technical knockout at the hands of Jon Jones this past April.

One year older than Sonnen, Silva rebounded from a hard-fought loss to Rich Franklin in his most recent outing, as the Brazilian knocked out Brian Stann on March 3 at UFC on Fuel TV 8. Silva, who began his pro career in 1996, is a veteran of 49 career outings and owns 25 wins by way of knockout.
