ATT Head ‘Conan’ Silveira Discusses Amanda Nunes’ Decision to Leave Team

There are no hard feelings between ex-Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes and her former team.

At UFC 269, two-division champ Amanda Nunes fell short to Julianna Pena and lost her 135-pound strap, suffering her first defeat since 2014 and ending an incredible 12-fight win streak. Since then, she announced her decision to leave her longtime camp of American Top Team, revealing details at the press conference of the upcoming season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Nunes plans on opening her own camp, where she will bring former ATT coaches with her for a more individual-focused team. Sherdog spoke this week with Nunes’ former head coach, “Conan” Marcus Silveira, who opened up with his side of the story.

“There was no disagreement,” Silveira revealed. “After the fight, Amanda had a friendly and adult conversation with us where she revealed her desire to open her own space and follow her path alone. I wished good luck and good choices.”

“Conan” made sure to clarify that in the seven years he trained her, she maintained a separate schedule from most of the other fighters in the camp. He also made certain to note she never suffered any pressure to fight hurt or in poor shape. Nunes previously explained that injuries to both of her knees led to a poor performance against Pena.

“I was the one in charge of her training,” “Conan” remarked. “I would never pressure her to fight without being in her best conditions. What already happened was the opposite. Once, she was not in her best shape and, even being already the champion, we decided to postpone the fight. Pressure of any of our fighters to fight injured is something that would never happen here in ATT.”

Silveira also talked about the former ATT trainers that will help Amanda for the 30th season of TUF, which will feature a rematch between Nunes and Pena later on this year.

“Kami Barzini was already cut from ATT a long time ago,” the ATT head stated. “After that, he even worked [with the] Blackzilians. Concerning Roger Krahl, he has an ATT branch, but he [doesn’t] work with our professional team.”

The possibility of being in the corner of high-profile free agent Kayla Harrison against Nunes, if one day the Professional Fighters League champ joins the UFC, was also addressed by ATT coach.

“Actually Kayla’s head coach is Mike Brown, but I can answer you that no doubt it’s a real possibility. Even when she was in ATT, we know that it could happen, but now of course it’s more possible; after all we are professionals,” concluded Silveira.
