Paul Daley: “Semtex” Ready for Jenkins

Pedro WrobelApr 29, 2005

Sherdog.com: So with all your jet setting where do you see your future?

Daley: I'm gonna keep commuting between the UK and the U.S. as long as there are things I can learn there. As for the fighting, I'll go wherever there is money to be made and exposure to be had.

Sherdog.com: How about Japan?

Daley: (laughs) Japan is a dream! Japan is where we want to go! Me and my coach have a dream: two Japanese girls in a hotel room …

Rupert Smillie (coach): That's two girls each — I'm not sharing mine!

Daley: Money, exposure and girls, that's the ticket.

Dan Hardy (teammate): Belts, p___y and bling, that's the motto that me and Paul agreed on. That's what we want.

Sherdog.com: Hang on, where's the bling come from, I thought you guys wanted money?

Hardy: The money is the bling.

Daley: The bling is the diamond watch I'm getting next Thursday once I've been paid — that's the bling!

Sherdog.com: If that's the bling then I'm definitely blingless. So now I'm depressed and we'll have to move on. You're only 21 aren't you Paul?

Daley: Actually I'm 22 now so I'm feeling a bit like an old man.

Sherdog.com: Don't even start. So how old were you when you made your pro debut?

Daley: I was 18, and I fought against a guy called John Connelly. He's a big Irish guy, looks like Dolph Lundgren. I was fighting as a middleweight at the time — 5'9”, 18-years-old and fighting against fully-grown men. That didn't save Connelly though, he got knocked out.

Sherdog.com: How do your parents feel about your MMA career?

Daley: I think they're good about it. They're supportive. MMA has given my life a focus, because otherwise I would probably get into mischief.

Hardy: Probably?

Daley: OK, I'd definitely be getting into mischief. The thing is that this sport is me through and through. I have so much passion for fight sports and for MMA in particular and now with all the titles and the money and the business together. Shit man, that's me.

Sherdog.com: Belts, money and bling?

Hardy: Belts, p___y and bling.

Sherdog.com: Did I forget the p___y?

Daley: You can't forget the p___y, man!

Sherdog.com: I think I'd better move on before I shame myself further. So are you full pro now or do you have a day job?

Daley: Let's see, when did I take it upon myself to leave full time employment … around nine months ago. Now I survive by teaching classes, promoting the new show (Nemesis) with my coach …

Hardy: Hustling …

Daley: … I'm sponsored by Blitz martial arts supplies, so that's a big help.

Hardy: Plus, he hustles.

Sherdog.com: I don't even want to go there. Let's talk about Rough House. Paul, you started the team with a guy called Matt, right?

Daley: Yeah, Matt "Missing in Action" Howell. We were at the KSBO amateur MMA competition. We were 17-years-old and we saw that the form required us to put in a team name. We didn't even have a proper club, let alone a team name. And there we were, just beating each other up and people walking past were saying "man, those guys are rough," and that's when the inspiration came. The name just stuck ever since.

Sherdog.com: So how did Dan Hardy get involved?

Hardy: I choked Matt out.

Daley: Dan beat Matt at KSBO and that was our first introduction. At the time, Dan was training with Paul Lloyd Davies but he parted ways with that team after Daley's genius enlightened him.

Hardy: And thus, the Ninja Death Squad was formed.

Daley: Yeah. And now Rough House has five pro fighters, five coaches and a gym called "Bushido" due to open in the very near future. The gym is Lee Livingstone's baby — he's our BJJ coach. The gym will be the equal of any gym in the U.S. It'll have a cage, ring, weights — everything to turn us into animals.

Sherdog.com: Good stuff. So how about Cage Rage? Tell us your thoughts on the promotion.

Daley: Cage Rage is the No. 1 promotion in the UK at the moment, but there are a few that are hot on its heels: KOTC UK, CageWarriors …

Sherdog.com: What's it like fighting in Cage Rage?

Jenkins: It's the best! Cage Rage weekends with the Rough House team are legendary man! If we're not fighting then we come here anyway and watch the fights from the VIP area. It's great because there are all the celebs about, the TV, you feel like a celebrity, you know? And I think that this is what we deserve as fighters. I quit work, I train so hard and sometimes I feel that we deserve this now and then, as a reward for all the dedication.

Sherdog.com: Thanks Paul, you've been great. Do you have any final comments you want to make?

Daley: I just want to say thank you to the ATT for the insight they gave me into how professional fighters should be training. Thank you to Eddie Bravo and the Bomb Squad gym, thank you to Blitz, my sponsors and, of course, thank you to Team Rough House.

As for a message to the fans, it's this: Get ready because a “Semtex” KO is coming to an arena near you!
