This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Frankie Edgar Turns 36

Still going strong well into his 30s, Frankie Edgar has a well-established reputation as one of MMA’s most durable and consistent competitors. The man they call “The Answer” will celebrate his 36th birthday on Oct. 16.

One of nine fighters who have captured the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight crown, Edgar held the title for 687 days -- the second-longest reign at 155 pounds in the history of the promotion. The New Jersey native has compiled a stellar 16-5-1 record in the UFC, including wins over B.J. Penn (three), Sean Sherk, Gray Maynard, Charles Oliveira, Cub Swanson, Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes and Jeremy Stephens. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under former Pancrase champion Ricardo Almeida, Edgar has never been finished in his 28-fight career. He last competed at UFC 211 on May 13, when he scored a second-round technical knockout against highly regarded prospect Yair Rodriguez, the victory putting him on a short list of potential suitors for current featherweight champion Max Holloway. Before he transitioned to mixed martial arts, Edgar wrestled collegiately at Clarion University in Pennsylvania, where he was a four-time national qualifier.
