The Walkmen: UFC Fight Night ‘Hendricks vs. Thompson’

The songs fighters chose to trumpet their arrival at UFC Fight Night “Hendricks vs. Thompson” on Saturday in Las Vegas were again part of the story. No tune was as electrifying as Stephen Thompson’s first-round destruction of former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Johny Hendricks, but some of the tracks were attention-getters.

Thompson strolled to the cage for the most significant fight of his career to the comedic anthem that parallels his nickname, as “Wonderboy” went with Tenacious D’s “Wonderboy.” While many people inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena were chuckling at the humorous ditty Jack Black & Co. created, no one was laughing at how easily Thompson dismantled Hendricks.

Hendricks might need a few flasks of Crown Royal to help ease the pain from a headache brought on by losing in highlight-reel fashion. Perhaps it was fitting then that the “Bigg Rigg” opted to go with Bleu Edmondson’s “$50 and a Flask of Crown.”

Roy Nelson’s heavyweight co-main event against Jared Rosholt was far from entertaining, but he walked out to his favored entrance song: Weird Al Yankovic’s “Fat.” His forgettable three-round clash with Rosholt could have used some of the humor for which Yankovic became known back in the day.

Other standout tracks included Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” (Joseph Benavidez), Tupac’s “All Eyes on Me” (K.J. Noons) and Sabaton’s “40:1” (Damian Grabowski).
