The first of three consecutive Ultimate Fighting Championship events on Thursday in Las Vegas was memorable, not just because Eddie Alvarez knocked out Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title but because the entire card was loaded with action. From thrilling knockouts and stellar submissions to brawls that were too close to call, UFC Fight Night “Dos Anjos vs. Alvarez” had it all.
Alvarez opted to use “Victory” (Puff Daddy feat. Notorious B.I.G.) as his entrance music, and it obviously worked. The Philadelphia native rocked the champion with a booming right hook and then finished off dos Anjos with a series of punches that brought with it UFC gold.
Meanwhile, Alan Jouban chose a hip-hop classic, as Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” helped him survive a “Fight of the Night” war with reigning Titan Fighting Championship titleholder Belal Muhammad. A short-notice replacement for the injured Nordine Taleb, Muhammad kept with the rap theme and went with DMX’s “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” to prep for his Octagon debut.
Other standout tracks included Weird Al Yankovic’s “Fat” (Roy Nelson), AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” (John Makdessi), Robert Tepper’s “No Easy Way Out” (Reginaldo Vieira) and Motorhead’s all-time classic “Ace of Spades” (Mitch Clarke).
