World-Class Mixed Martial Arts Event Coming to Charlotte's Time
Warner Cable Arena for the First Time Ever
Former UFC heavyweight champion to return to MMA in much-anticipated fight
Charlotte, N.C., April 16, 2008 -- Forget Vegas baby. For one night
this summer, Charlotte, N.C., will be the center of the
championship mixed martial arts (MMA) world when it hosts the most
prestigious MMA competition ever on the East Coast. The event,
already building buzz amongst MMA enthusiasts, takes place June 21
at 7 00 p.m. at Time Warner Cable Arena, formerly known as
Charlotte Bobcats Arena.
Global Fighting LLC, the organization bringing MMA to the Queen City for the first time ever, signed two of the sport's most recognizable stars to headline the event. Former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin `The Monster` Randleman will battle UFC heavyweight contender and grappling circuit standout Jeff `The Snowman` Monson in the evening's main fight. MMA athletes combine a variety of fighting styles, such as boxing, judo, jiu-jitsu, karate, kickboxing, Muy Thai, taekwondo and or wrestling, in each fight.
In addition to Randleman and Monson, the night will feature proven MMA fighters Murilo Bustamante (Pictures), Josh Haynes (Pictures), Sergio Moraes (Pictures), Chris Clodfelter, Milton Vieira (Pictures), Lynn Alvarez (Pictures) and Phil Cardella (Pictures). Additional fighters will be added and announced in the coming weeks. Fight card subject to change.
The Main Event Randleman v. Monson
Kevin `The Monster` Randleman, 5'10`, 205 lbs, started his fighting career back in high school where he won a state wrestling championship. He attended Ohio State University where he was a three-time All American, three-time Big Ten Champion and two-time NCAA National Champion.
Professionally, Randleman captured the UFC Heavyweight Champion Belt at UFC 23. He possesses great fighting skills in his stand-up game, but also has incredible take-down technique where he loves to ground and pound. Randleman owns a professional MMA record of 16-11.
Jeff `The Snowman` Monson is one of the world's top submission grapplers and is coming into his own at the highest level of MMA. At 5' 9` and 240 pounds of solid muscle, Monson is taking MMA on both sides of the ocean by storm.
One of the most recognized MMA athletes in the United States, Monson is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a powerhouse in submission grappling. In both 1999 and 2005 he won the prestigious Abu Dhabi Submission Grappling World Tournament in the Heavyweight Division. He is a multiple event winner at NAGA, Grappler`s Quest, and the Budweiser Invitational, where he continues to compete. Monson is ready to issue a challenge to or accept a challenge from any fighter in the world.
