The Film Room: Julian Marquez

Julian Marquez boasts an impressive 7-1 record, finds himself on a five-fight winning streak and appears eager to test himself against the best middleweights on the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster. After a crushing second-round knockout of Phil Hawes on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, “The Cuban Missile Crisis” took to the Octagon and submitted Darren Stewart with a guillotine choke in the second round of their UFC on Fox 26 encounter. It was a stellar promotional debut for the Syndicate MMA representative.

This installment of The Film Room examines Marquez’s exploits:

Devastating Power

In his aforementioned clash with Hawes on Aug. 1, Marquez opened the second round with a barrage of punches that put his counterpart on the defensive. While both men were clearly exhausted, Marquez took advantage of a struggling Hawes and landed a brutal head kick for the knockout -- an exclamation point that netted him a UFC contract.

Willing Trade Partner

Marquez made it clear that he was willing to stand and exchange in his professional MMA debut against Charles Rooks at Blackout Fighting Championship 22 in 2014. It took him less than a minute to bring their battle to a close, as Rooks’ corner threw in the towel to save him from further damage 53 seconds into the first round. That same punching power made an appearance under the Combate Americas banner on Oct. 14, 2016, when Marquez wiped out Matt Hamill with punches in 1:22.

Strong, Resilient Type

The only stain on Marquez’s resume was put there by the hands of Chris Harris at Bellator 150 on Feb. 26, 2016. It was a memorable confrontation, as the two men, both undefeated at the time, traded shots and countershots for three rounds. Harris walked away with a unanimous decision. Marquez was not the least bit deterred by the result, as evidenced by the fact that he has rattled off five straight wins since.
