MM-Eh! News and Notes from Canada

Jonathan Goulet (Pictures) was none too pleased when he learned that his bout against Mike Swick (Pictures) on Sept. 19 was canceled.

Goulet told Sherdog.com he learned of Swick's injury when his manager, Ken Pavia, called him late one night.

"He asked me to sit and I wasn't but I said I was," the French-Canadian welterweight recalled. "He said that Swick canceled the fight -- he pulled out due to an injury.

"When I heard the news I was very mad. I was pissed off. That was crazy; I was yelling everywhere, and that day I hit the punching bag so hard. I did good training and good runs and sprints -- I had no choice but to do that I was so mad."

Pavia then mentioned the UFC's idea for a replacement: Jorge Gurgel (Pictures) student Dustin Hazelett (Pictures).

"I didn't know that name, so I told Ken that I'm trusting him," Goulet said. "So if he said that I'm able to beat Dustin, I'm going to accept that fight."

Goulet indicated that his stand-up game has improved leaps and bounds in the short time since he sought help from Muay Thai coach Mark DellaGrotte.

"I went to Sityodtong in Boston with Patrick Cote (Pictures) and I improved a lot," he said. "I don't know what Mark DellaGrotte has, but I think he's a magician. When my friends spar with me they don't recognize me -- I'm not the same guy. I'm quicker and faster and more light on my feet."

The "Road Warrior" also said that he's not overly concerned by Hazelett's skill on the floor, where six of his victories have been attained by way of submission.

"I'm not underestimating him," Goulet said. "I'm a survivor. I think that if he tries to submit me, that's going to be hard for him. I knock on wood when I say that, but I think I'm going to be stronger than him."

Goulet finished by saying his conditioning is perfect for the UFC Fight Night 11 bout.

"I'm going to fight him to let everyone see what I am able to do and how I fight when I am mad. I'm still angry and I need to punish a guy. Unfortunately that's going to be Dustin."

Catching up with Extreme Cage Combat

ECC Promoter Peter Martell told MM-Eh! that his next event is scheduled for Oct. 20 in Halifax. Headlining will be his promotion's fast-rising light heavyweight star Roger Hollett (Pictures) against American Top Team's Tom Lawlor, a match-up slated for earlier this year before Lawlor sustained an injury.

Martell said finding an opponent for Hollett these days is no easy task.

"A lot of guys say they'll take on Roger, but then they ask for some crazy amount of money," Martell said.

Joining Hollett on the ECC card will be his Titans MMA teammates Ryan Jimmo, Peter McGrath (Pictures), Aaron Jollimore, Adam MacDonald, and Tannaya Hantelman (Pictures). Maritime fighters Travis Axworthy (Pictures) and Rowan Cunningham (Pictures) could also join the card.

Martell confirmed what Maximum Fighting Championships president Mark Pavelich revealed to MM-Eh! readers last week: that UFC middleweight Jason MacDonald (Pictures) will hold his training camp for Yushin Okami (Pictures) with Martell and Hollett.
