TOTAL NUMBER OF UFC EVENTS: 698
The Ultimate Fighting Championship did its best to put forth an event and help clean its roster ahead of the upcoming season of Dana White's Contender Series. A few noteworthy happenings and one push towards a title resulted at night’s end, although divisional relevance was sparse. UFC on ESPN 60 featured a bubbly Brazilian quietly climbing several leaderboards, an angry android created for punching and a bulldog that has decided to start biting back.
The Win She’s Been Looking For: In the second round, Virna Jandiroba hit an armbar on Amanda Lemos to establish herself as a top contender at 115 pounds. The strawweight now holds the fourth-most stoppages (four) as well as the second-most submissions (three) and attempts (13).
Clobbering Time: Steve Garcia clubbed Seung Woo Choi in 96 seconds to put himself on a four-fight knockout streak. “Mean Machine” celebrates 81% of his pro victories via strikes while never landing a submission.
Escaping Calamity: Kurt Holobaugh and Cody Gibson came into this event with 1-5 UFC records, one loss shy of the record set by Elvis Sinosic for the fewest wins after seven fights. Holobaugh and Gibson avoided reaching the “Sinosic Line,” with Holobaugh taking a thrilling decision over Kaynan Kruschewsky.
Bulldog, Not Blindado: “Bulldog” Bruno Silva (#118601) clobbered Cody Durden to stage the second-round comeback. His four stoppage wins have come in his last four wins, and seven flyweights in organizational history have recorded more stoppage triumphs.
Finger Says No Mas: Courtesy of one left hand, Doo Ho Choi forced Bill Algeo to submit to strikes. He is the first UFC fighter to tap to strikes this year and the first since Pat Sabatini surrendered to Damon Jackson’s blows at UFC Fight Night 210 in 2022.
Tekken Combo: Landing a few dozen unanswered blows on Jeong Yeong Lee, Hyder Amil picked up his 10th pro win after 10 attempts. His finish rate rose to 70% with the concussive win.
The Best Feeling in the World: In June 2014, Gibson stopped Johnny Bedford with one punch at UFC Fight Night 44. Just over 10 years later, Gibson claimed his second win with the promotion by wiping out Brian Kelleher. At that time, only one of the fighters competing at UFC on ESPN 60 had fought for the UFC (Holobaugh), while 10 had yet to make their pro debuts.
Almost a Top Gun: Miranda Maverick put herself on her longest UFC win streak by prevailing over Dione Barbosa on the scorecards. Her seven wins at 125 pounds are two shy of divisional leaders Valentina Shevchenko and Katlyn Cerminara.
Dreadful Watch: After three rounds, Luana Carolina claimed the decision nod over Lucie Pudilova. “Dread” has gone to Round 3 in eight of her nine UFC outings, including seven in a row.
Same Fighter as Before: Pudilova suffered her eighth defeat when she came up short against Carolina. Six women in the organization's history have sustained more losses, with Angela Hill’s 13 atop the pack.
Try “The Tank Engine”: Thomas Petersen needed all three rounds to win against Mohammed Usman. It marked the first decision victory in the career of “The Train.”
Never Say Never Again: Coming into UFC on ESPN 60, Durden had never been knocked out (22 fights); Lee had never been finished (12 fights); and Kruschewsky (18 fights), Algeo (26 fights) and Usman (13 fights) had never dropped consecutive bouts.
Song and Dance: Jandiroba has switched up her music choice for her last five outings, now settling on “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. The Brazilian was not finished and instead armbarred her opponent.
A Theme for Wrestlers: For the second event in a row, a competitor selected “Lunatic Fringe” by Red Rider. Gibson went with the song made famous from the film “Vision” quest, and like Andre Petroski at UFC on ESPN 59, Gibson triumphed. Fighters using this song sport a win percentage of .652.
