TOTAL NUMBER OF UFC EVENTS: 665
The Ultimate Fighting Championship ended a marathon of week-to-week events by heading to its headquarters of the UFC Apex. While a few decent finishes came around, the show ultimately resulted in a number of unfortunate results, odd calls and strange decisions. UFC Fight Night 228 featured the first disqualification in almost a year and a half, a disappointing injury stoppage in the main attraction and a pair of expensively named fighters coming up short.
Not Quite a Record, But It Felt Like It: Dating
back to UFC on ESPN 46 on June 3, the UFC has staged events on 17
consecutive Saturdays. This stretch of non-stop weekly shows is the
second-longest streak in organizational history. In 2020, 24 cards
from July 11 to Dec. 19 amount for the lengthiest unending series
of UFC cards.
To Asterisk or Not to Asterisk: The main event of UFC Vegas 79 concluded due to a knee injury suffered by Rafael Fiziev. Mateusz Gamrot’s victory via TKO due to injury is the 10th in a headlining UFC bout.
FREEDOM: Over the course of three rounds, Bryce Mitchell picked up the unanimous nod over Dan Ige. Since joining the roster in 2018, six of the seven wins for “Thug Nasty” have come on the scorecards.
Broke: Both Ige and Hannah Goldy sport nicknames referencing money or valuables in some fashion, with the former going by “50k” and the latter calling herself “24K.” Both fighters ended up losing decisions.
The World’s Most Unnecessary Rematch: In the rematch down at strawweight, Marina Rodriguez butchered Michelle Waterson-Gomez en route to a second-round stoppage. The Brazilian picked up just the second stoppage win in her 12-fight UFC tenure.
A Different Kind of Heat: Going down due to strikes after the midpoint of the second frame, Waterson-Gomez suffered her second stoppage loss due to strikes. The first came against Elena Reid in April 2009, and at that time, the only other fighter competing at UFC Fight Night 228 fighting as a pro at the time was Tim Means.
Won the Battle on the Scales First: In his first official fight as a welterweight – he missed weight in his jaunt to 170 pounds in May – Bryan Battle outworked and strangled A.J. Fletcher with a rear-naked choke. “The Butcher” now sports a finish rate of 80% as a professional.
Speaks French, Likes Guillotines: High-flying Canadian Charles Jourdain tapped Ricardo Ramos with a guillotine choke in the first round. Throughout a career that began in 2016, Jourdain has earned stoppages in 87% of his victories.
Making It Dirty: Earning his first win since 2021, Means put Andre Fialho down with a knee and follow-up punches. “The Dirty Bird” celebrates 25 stoppages on his ledger, including seven in the Octagon. This ties Means with a number of other fighters including Georges St. Pierre and Robbie Lawler for the seventh-most in UFC welterweight history.
More Than a Means to an End: For the third time as a UFC fighter, Means dropped his foe twice in a fight. Means’ 11 total knockdowns in the 170-pound division puts him two behind divisional leader Thiago Alves, while matching the total of Matt Brown and Jake Ellenberger.
Foul Foul Foul: Due to an illegal elbow, Cody Brundage earned the disqualification win against Jacob Malkoun. This marked the first DQ in the Octagon since Dean Barry gouged Mike Jackson’s eyes in April 2022, for the 21st in organizational history. There has been at least one DQ every year dating back to 2017.
Welcome Back, Mizuki: Mizuki Inoue made her first walk to the cage since August 2020, where she won a decision over Goldy. Each of her last five outings dating back to 2018 has heard the final bell.
Should Have Been TKO by What: Keeping her young record undefeated at 6-0, Montserrat Rendon snagged a split decision over Tamires Vidal. In six pro appearances, Rendon has won six decisions.
Never Say Never Again: Coming into UFC Fight Night 228, Fiziev had never dropped consecutive bouts (14 fights), Fletcher had never been finished (12 fights) and Vidal had never lost on the scorecards (eight fights).
Fall Out Boys and Girls: This event became the first in organizational history to feature not one but two selections of Fall Out Boy songs. Gamrot went with his staple of “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark” while Inoue picked “The Phoenix,” and both combatants had their hands raised.
Sweet Sweet Fantasy Baby: Walking out to “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey, Cody Brundage ultimately earned a win at night’s end. He is the second fighter to pick this song, with the first going to Tyson Pedro against Ilir Latifi at UFC 215 in 2017.
