Commission’s “Business Commitments” Prevent Thursday Hearing

Thursday’s scheduled hearing of the California State Athletic Commission has been cancelled after four of the body’s seven commissioners—Chairman Christopher Mears, Bruce Jenner, Gene Massey and Mike Carona—informed interim Executive Director Dean Lohuis they would be unable to attend, Sherdog.com learned early Monday.

On short notice, including a Monday morning E-mail from one commissioner, Mears, Jenner and Massey cited “business commitments” as reason for their absence; last week Carona notified Lohuis that he would be in Sacramento by request of Governor Schwarzenegger.

Thursday, after nearly four years of lobbying by California MMA advocates, a new and final set of MMA rules and regulations was expected to be approved by the CSAC.

However, with only three commissioners—Vice-Chair John Frierson, Armando Vergara and Dr. Gary Glitnick—able to attend, no quorum could be called, thus no vote could be cast.

At minimum, Lohuis said, the cancellation adds 30 days to a timeline that was supposed to have sanctioned, professional MMA bouts in the Golden State by the middle of spring.

“Every day wasted is a blow to this thing,” said Lohuis from his Los Angeles office.

A new hearing is yet to be scheduled.
