The Dutch veteran withstood an early onslaught from Walt Harris to rally for a second-round technical knockout victory in the UFC on ESPN 8 main event on Saturday night at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Harris was on the verge of a finish in Round 1, but “The Big Ticket” faded badly down the stretch as Overeem took over to win for the third time in his last four fights.
Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on ESPN 8, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.
18: UFC bouts for Overeem, tying him with Cheick Kongo and Mark Hunt for eighth most in promotion history at heavyweight.
8: KO/TKO wins for Overeem, tying him with Roy Nelson and Matt Mitrione for seventh most in the history of the promotion.
10: Career knockdowns landed by Overeem after Saturday night. That ties him with Cain Velasquez and Andrei Arlovski for second most in the history of the heavyweight division.
48: Total strike advantage for Overeem in the second frame, when he dropped Harris with a head kick-left hand combination and then attacked with a series of unanswered blows from back mount until the bout was halted at the 3:00 mark.
.800: Significant striking accuracy for Overeem, who landed 68 of 85 attempts. The Dutchman entered the evening with a 73.4 percent rate, tops among all fighters in promotion history with at least five bouts and 350 significant strike attempts.
7: Strawweight victories for Claudia Gadelha, who edged Angela Hill via split decision in Saturday’s co-main event. That ties her with Jessica Andrade, Carla Esparza and Hill for the second most in the history of the division. Joanna Jedrzejczyk is No. 1 with 10 wins at 115 pounds.
13: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 17 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that awarded the strawweight bout to Hill.
90: Significant strikes landed by Hill. By comparison, Gadelha landed 84. Hill outlanded her foe 80 to 63 over the final two rounds while scoring a knockdown in the second stanza.
6: Consecutive victories for Dan Ige, tying him with Alexander Volkanovski and Zabit Magomedsharipov for the second longest active winning streak at featherweight. Arnold Allen owns the top spot with seven straight triumphs. Ige took a split decision over Edson Barboza in a featured 145-pound bout.
16: Unofficial media scorecards of the 18 tracked by MMADecisions.com that awarded the fight to Barboza, who was making his featherweight debut after a lengthy stint at featherweight.
1: Significant strike advantage for Barboza over the course of the three-round bout. The Brazilian outlanded his opponent 31 to 23 in Round 1, but Ige held advantages of 31 to 30 and 25 to 19 in Rounds 2 and 3, respectively. Ige also landed the only takedown of the fight in the final stanza.
9: Middleweight victories since 2013 for Krzysztof Jotko, tying him with Ronaldo Souza and Yoel Romero for the third most in division during that span. Derek Brunson and Thiago Santos are tied for first with 10 wins.

9: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 17 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the bantamweight clash between Marlon Vera and Yadong Song in favor of Vera. However, all three cageside judges submitted 29-28 tallies in favor of Song.
101: Significant strikes landed by Song, 79 of which were landed to the head. By comparison, Vera landed just 41 of his 92 significant strikes to the head.
51: Combined significant strikes landed to the body (29) and legs (22) by Vera. Song landed 22 combined significant strikes to these areas.
8: Occasions in which Matt Brown has been finished in UFC competition. That ties him with 10 other fighters for the second most in promotion history. Tim Boetsch is all alone in the top spot with nine UFC finish losses. “The Immortal” suffered a second-round knockout loss to Miguel Baeza in Saturday’s featured preliminary bout at UFC on ESPN 8.
26: Octagon appearances for Brown, tying him with Thiago Alves for the most in UFC welterweight history.
65: Combined significant strikes landed by Brown (33) and Baeza (32) in an action packed opening stanza that saw both combatants rocked at different points.
2: Knockdowns landed by Baeza, who floored Brown once in each frame.
0:39: Time of Kevin Holland’s victory over Anthony Hernandez in a preliminary middleweight contest. That makes it the third-fastest finish stemming from a body strike in UFC history behind only Chad Mendes’ 31-second finish of Cody McKenzie at UFC 148 and Poliana Botelho’s 33-second stoppage of Syuri Kondo at UFC Fight Night 129.
239: Combined significant strikes landed by Darren Elkins (121) and Nate Landwehr (118) in their preliminary featherweight tilt. Landwehr outlanded his foe 43 to 39 in Round 2 and 50 to 49 in Round 3, while Elkins held a 33-to-25 advantage in the opening stanza. That total represents a UFC career best for Elkins, who dropped a unanimous decision to the former M-1 Challenge champion.
12: Takedowns defended in 13 attempts by Landwehr. Elkins landed his lone successful takedown in the opening stanza but was stymied on all nine attempts over the course of the bout’s final 10 minutes.
9: Armbar submission finishes in the UFC women’s flyweight division from 2017 to 2019. That’s three times more than any other division during that period. Cortney Casey authored the division’s first armbar submission of 2020, tapping Mara Romero Borella with the maneuver 3:36 into the opening round of their clash.
1: Fighter to appear on each of the first three seasons of Dana White’s Contender Series. Heavyweight Don’Tale Mayes stands alone in that category, as he compiled a 2-1 record on the show before earning a UFC contract. “Kong” fell to 0-2 in the Octagon after being submitted by Rodrigo Nascimento Ferreira in a preliminary affair.
11: Occasions where the UFC has held 3 events within an eight-day span. The recent three-card stretch in Jacksonville, Florida, which concluded with UFC on ESPN 8, occurred under the most unique circumstances of all due to the coronavirus pandemic.
