By the Numbers: UFC 287

Alex Pereira may still lead their overall combat sports series, but Israel Adesanya definitely has a leg up on his rival in real time.

“The Last Stylebender” earned his first victory over Pereira in brutal fashion, knocking out his former kickboxing foe 4:21 into the second stanza of their headlining bout at UFC 287 in Miami on Saturday night. Adesanya begins his second reign as middleweight champion after losing the belt to Pereira at UFC 281 this past November. Pereira, meanwhile, owns a 3-1 record against the Nigerian-born Kiwi, but he’ll head home empty-handed following his second career MMA defeat.

8: Victories in title fights for Adesanya, the second most in UFC history behind only Anderson Silva (11).

49: Significant strikes landed by Pereira. Adesanya, meanwhile, landed 41 along with the fight’s only knockdown.

26: Significant leg strikes for Pereira. By comparison, Adesanya landed nine. “Poatan” buckled his opponent’s leg with a steady diet of calf kicks before falling victim to his own aggression in the second round.

18: Significant head strikes landed by Adesanya. Pereira, meanwhile, landed eight.

4: Takedowns landed in six attempts for Gilbert Burns in a three-round verdict over Jorge Masvidal in the co-main event. “Durinho” also logged 5:41 of control time in the bout.

34: Significant head strikes landed by Burns. By comparison, Masvidal landed 14. Overall, Burns held a 42-to-39 edge in significant strikes landed.

52: Documented career MMA bouts for Masvidal, who announced his retirement in the Octagon following his loss to Burns. Masvidal’s official debut occurred on May 24, 2003.

7: Finishes for Rob Font after his first-round technical knockout victory over Adrian Yanez in their featured bantamweight clash. That ties him with Urijah Faber for the third most in UFC history at 135 pounds. Only Marlon Vera (10) and T.J. Dillashaw (eight) have more finishes at bantamweight.

6: Knockout wins for Font at bantamweight, tying him with Vera for second most in UFC history behind Dillashaw (seven).

27: Significant strikes by which Christian Rodriguez outlanded Raul Rosas Jr. in their bantamweight clash. Rodriguez outlaned his 18-year-old foe by an 83-to-2 count in total strikes.

13: Takedowns successfully defended, out of 16 attempts, by Rodriguez. Rosas Jr. landed three of eight attempts in Round 1 but failed on his next eight tries over the bout’s final 10 minutes. Rodriguez, meanwhile, was successful on his lone takedown of the fight and logged 7:30 of control time to his opponent’s 4:50.

83: Significant strikes landed by Kelvin Gastelum in a unanimous decision triumph over Chris Curtis at middleweight. By comparison, Curtis landed 70. Gastelum outlanded his foe 63 to 44 in head strikes and 15 to 5 in leg strikes, while Curtis held a 21-to-5 advantage in significant body strikes.

12: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 17 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the strawweight fight between Michelle Waterson-Gomez and Luana Pinheiro in favor of Waterson-Gomez. Judges Chris Lee and Eliseo Rodriguez saw things differently, submitting 29-28 tallies in favor of Pinheiro to give the Brazilian a split-decision triumph.

61: Significant strikes landed by Waterson-Gomez. By comparison, Pinheiro landed 44. Waterson-Gomez outlanded her foe 20 to 15 in Round 1 and 22 to 10 in Round 3. The Jackson-Wink MMA product also held a 70-to-48 edge in total strikes and landed the bout’s only takedown.

4: Consecutive KO/TKO victories in professional competition for Joe Pyfer, who vanquished Gerald Meerschaert via technical knockout 3:15 into the open round of their preliminary middleweight bout. Pyfer’s run includes a pair of first-round stoppages in UFC competition and a second-round finish on Dana White’s Contender Series.

8: Body strikes landed in eight attempts by Pyfer. The Pennsylvania native landed 14 of 24 significant strikes overall in the abbreviated contest.

333: Significant strikes attempted by Cynthia Calvillo, in a split-decision loss to Lupita Godinez at flyweight. Godinez, meanwhile attempted 180. Godinez was far more accurate, however, landing 87 significant strikes for a 48% success rate. Calvillo landed 104 significant strikes — a 31% clip.

5: Consecutive losses in UFC competition for Calvillo. In addition to Godinez, Calvillo has come up short against Nina Nunes, Andrea Lee, Jessica Andrade and Katlyn Chookagian. The San Jose, California, native began her promotional tenure with victories in six of her first eight Octagon appearances.

99: Significant strikes landed by Ignacio Bahamondes in a clear-cut decision triumph over Trey Ogden in a 160-pound catchweight affair. By comparison, Ogden landed 42. This included a 41-to-8 edge in significant leg strikes landed for the Chilean fighter.

3: Knockdowns landed by Nuerdanbieke Shayilan in his last three UFC appearances. The Chinese featherweight floored Steve Garcia in the opening round of their bout on Saturday, but Garcia ultimately rallied to earn a finish 36 seconds into Round 2.

53: Total strikes by which Sam Hughes outlanded Jaquelin Amorim over the final two rounds in their preliminary strawweight clash. After nearly being submitted in the opening stanza, Hughes rallied to capture a unanimous decision triumph over the former Legacy Fighting Alliance champion.

3: Submissions attempted by Amorim in Round 1, including a pair of rear-naked chokes that briefly appeared to be under Hughes’ chin.

2: Takedowns landed in 10 attempts for Amorim. She went 0-for-8 over the bout’s final 10 minutes after fatigue took hold.
