By the Numbers: Roosevelt Roberts vs. Vinc Pichel

Following a motorcycle accident, the heavy-handed Vinc Pichel will return to the Octagon on June 29. Welcoming him back is Roosevelt Roberts, who has been exhibiting some solid grappling since his stint at Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.

The two up-and-coming lightweights will collide at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for UFC on ESPN 3. Let these numbers give you a glimpse on their encounter.

Age and height

Pichel will step inside the Octagon as the elder of the two fighters. At 36 years old, he is 11 years the senior of Roberts, who turned 25 on Feb. 11. Pichel, on the other hand, will be turning 37 on Nov. 23.

At 5’10”, Pichel is three inches shorter than Roberts, who makes good use of his lanky frame especially when hunting for submissions.

UFC appearances

Pichel entered the Ultimate Fighting Championship as an undefeated prospect who knocked out all of his opponents. In his first appearance in the Octagon, however, he found himself at the receiving end of a suplex and a few follow-up blows from Rustam Khabilov, who dealt him the first loss of his career. That happened at The Ultimate Fighter 16 finale on Dec. 15, 2012.

After dropping his debut, Pichel went 4-0, beating Garett Whiteley, Anthony Njokuani, Damien Brown and Joaquim Silva. But in his most recent fight, Pichel was submitted by Gregor Gillespie. His UFC record currently stands at 4-2.

Roosevelt has only appeared in the Octagon twice, debuting successfully by submitting Darrell Horcher at The Ultimate Fighter 28 finale. After that, he decisioned Thomas Gifford at UFC Fight Night 150, improving his UFC record to 2-0.

Wins by submission

Roberts owns four victories by submission, one of which was in the UFC. As aforementioned, he tapped out Horcher in his promotional debut. Before that, he submitted Michael Thomas, Dominic Clark and Garrett Gross. Pichel, on the other hand, has yet to stop anyone by submission.

Wins by knockout

When Pichel steps in the cage, his intention is to knock his opponent unconscious. After 13 professional fights, Pichel has tallied eight victories by KO or TKO. The lightweight from Simi Valley, California, notoriously started his career with seven knockouts, mostly in the second round. In all, his victims include Franky Childs, Miles Howard, Anthony McDavitt, Rodney Rhoden, Emilio Chavez, Matt Bahntge, David Gardner and Brown.

Roberts has some slick chokes in his arsenal, but he can also stop people with his fists. “The Predator” has proven this by knocking out Andrew Kauppila at King of the Cage, Shohei Yamamoto at California Xtreme Fighting and Tommy Aaron at Bellator. This also shows that between Roberts and Pichel, the former is the more dynamic fighter.

Career losses

Roberts keeps an unblemished record of 8-0. Meanwhile, Pichel has lost twice in 11 outings. As aforementioned, he was knocked out by Khabilov and tapped out by Gillespie.
