By the Numbers: Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar

The ordering process for Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-views has changed: UFC 240 is only available on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Max Holloway failed in his bid to become a two-division champ after losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 236. He is, nonetheless, back to defend his featherweight belt against perennial contender Frankie Edgar in the main event of UFC 240. Let the numbers below show just how action-packed this one can get.

Age, height and arm reach

At 37, Edgar is 10 years the senior of Holloway at the time of their fight. The former will turn 38 on Oct. 16 while the latter will turn 28 on Dec. 4. Holloway, who stands 5’11”, towers over “The Answer” who is 5’6”. There isn’t much difference on arm reach, though, as Holloway registers at 69” compared to Edgar’s 68”.

Longest winning streak

Edgar started his career with nine straight victories without a single defeat, victimizing Eric Uresk, Mark Getto, Jerome Isip, Steve McCabe, Deividas Taurosevičius, Jim Miller, Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek and Spencer Fisher. This impressive run ended when he lost to Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 13.

Holloway’s career-defining winning streak was longer at 13. It started with a win over Will Chope and included triumphs over Andre Fili, Clay Collard, Akira Corassani, Cole Miller, Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira, Jeremy Stephens, Ricardo Lamas, Anthony Pettis, Jose Aldo twice, and lastly, Brian Ortega. It was of course, snapped against Poirier.

Significant strikes landed on common opponents:

Jose Aldo

Holloway fought Jose Aldo twice and shut him down on both occasions. He landed 104 significant strikes at UFC 212 and 174 at UFC 218 for a total of 278 significant strikes.

Edgar also fought Aldo twice, but would lose on both occasions. He landed 60 significant strikes compared to Aldo’s 76 in their first meeting, before landing 79 significant strikes as opposed to Aldo’s 80 in the rematch at UFC 200.

Cub Swanson

Edgar defeated Cub Swanson both times they fought. He landed 93 significant strikes in their first fight, in which he won via neck crank in the fifth round. Their rematch was more competitive as Edgar landed 58 significant strikes opposite Swanson’s 48 to take the unanimous decision victory. Holloway also beat Swanson, landing 82 significant strikes and ending the fight with a guillotine choke in round three.

Brian Ortega

Holloway dismantled Brian Ortega at UFC 231, and in so doing, broke the record for the most significant strikes landed in a single fight at 290. The fight ended with a 4th-round TKO victory for the Hawaiian. Edgar, on the other hand, was knocked out by Ortega in an action-packed first round that saw the former slightly outpointing the latter, 27-25.

Jeremy Stephens

The opposing fighters own a lopsided decision victory over Stephens. Holloway’s win was highlighted by the 57 significant strikes and one takedown he landed. Edgar’s victory was highlighted by his 40 significant strikes and five takedowns scored.
