Following her impressive Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, Amanda Ribas will take on fellow prospect Mackenzie Dern in her next outing. Dern, who is returning from a maternity leave, still sports an undefeated MMA record and is looking to pick up right where she left off. As the two strawweights prepare to step inside the Octagon for UFC Fight Night 161, here are some numbers that might just define their matchup.

Octagon appearances

Dern’s upcoming bout will mark her third foray into the Octagon. She debuted in the UFC with a unanimous decision victory over Ashley Yoder at UFC 222 held on March 3, 2018, and then followed that up by submitting Amanda Bobby Cooper just two months later at UFC 224. Like Dern, Ribas is also undefeated in the UFC, having won her debut against Emily Whitmire at UFC on ESPN 3, which took place on June 29.

UFC debut performance

In her UFC debut, Dern was tested by Ashley Yoder. While there were occasions when she looked outmatched on the feet, Dern still landed more significant strikes with 70 to Yoder’s 52. She was also able to take her opponent to the ground once, something Yoder wasn’t able to do. In the end, Dern was awarded the split decision victory.

Ribas didn’t need three full rounds to make her first UFC bout count. At 2:10 of Round 2, she managed to sink in the rear-naked choke that ended the night early for Whitmire. Before that, she had landed 21 significant strikes and two takedowns compared to Whitmire’s seven and zero.

Wins by knockout

The more dynamic fighter between the two, Ribas carries three triumphs via KO or TKO. She’s also been knocked out once, by Polyana Viana, whom she met at Jungle Fight 83. Meanwhile, Dern has yet to stop anyone by knockout.

Wins by submission

Dern has shown some improved striking, but she’s always reverted to her bread and butter. She currently has four wins by submission, having tapped Amanda Bobby Cooper, Kaline Medeiros, Mandy Polk and Montana De La Rosa. Ribas, on the other hand, owns three submission wins. Apart from Whitmire, she also tapped out Tania Pereda and Ariane Carnelossi.

Fights that ended in a decision

Ribas has gone three full rounds only once in her eight-fight career. The result was a victory over Aline Sattelmayer at Jungle Fight 76. Meanwhile, Dern has heard the final bell three times – against Yoder, Katherine Roy and Kenia Rosas – and on all three occasions she had her hand raised.

First-round stoppages

Both Ribas and Dern have a knack for finishing fights early, with the former having four stoppages in the first round and the latter having three. Interestingly, Ribas’ lone defeat, dealt by Viana, also happened in the first round. Advertisement
