A division that was thought to be on life support not long ago will headline its second Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view in as many months when Deiveson Figueiredo risks his flyweight title against Brandon Moreno in the UFC 256 main event this Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Figueiredo appears to have brought stability to the weight class in the wake of Demetrious Johnson’s departure. The 32-year-old Brazilian last appeared at UFC 255 on Nov. 21, when he submitted Alex Perez with a first-round guillotine choke to retain his flyweight crown and extend his latest winning streak to five fights. Moreno, meanwhile, cemented himself as the No. 1 contender at 125 pounds at the same event, as he put away Brandon Royval with punches inside one round. The 27-year-old Entram Gym representative has rattled off three straight victories since his split draw with Askar Askarov in 2019.

As UFC 256 “Figuieredo vs. Moreno” approaches, a look at some of the numbers the fighters on the card have generated to this point:

15: Consecutive victories to start Figueiredo’s career. Jussier Formiga ended his run as an undefeated fighter with a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 148 on March 23, 2019.

10: Moreno wins by submission, accounting for 56% of his career total (18). His methods of choice: five rear-naked chokes, two triangle chokes, two armbars and one guillotine choke.

68: Seconds needed for Tony Ferguson to dismiss Devin Benjamin with punches under the National Fight Alliance MMA banner in 2009. Having occurred in Ferguson’s seventh professional appearance, it remains the fastest finish of his stellar 29-fight career. “El Cucuy” faces Charles Oliveira in the UFC 256 co-main event.

16: Post-fight bonuses banked by Oliveira since he joined the UFC roster, second most in company history behind Donald Cerrone (18). He has been awarded “Performance of the Night” on 10 different occasions, “Submission of the Night” three times and “Fight of the Night” three times, resulting in $795,000 of additional income.

4: Organizations in which Mackenzie Dern has competed as a mixed martial artist. She has gone 4-1 in the UFC, 2-0 in the Legacy Fighting Alliance, 2-0 in the Legacy Fighting Championship and 1-0 in Invicta Fighting Championships. The 2015 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist meets Virna Jandiroba in a women’s strawweight showcase.

7: Strawweight champions, including Jandiroba, in Invicta history. Carla Esparza, Katja Kankaanpaa, Livinha Souza, Angela Hill, Brianna Van Buren and Kanako Murata are the six other women who have struck gold in the organization’s 115-pound weight class.

41: Years of age for Ronaldo Souza. The oldest fighter on the card, he was born on Dec. 7, 1979 in Vila Velha, Brazil—a coastal city on the eastern side of the country. Souza draws Kevin Holland in his latest assignment.

2: Sub-minute stoppage wins on the Holland resume. He submitted Aaron Reeves in 22 seconds at a Kickass Productions show on May 29, 2015 and cut down Anthony Hernandez with knees and punches in 39 seconds at UFC on ESPN 8 on May 16, 2020.

14: Knockdowns landed by Junior dos Santos as a UFC heavyweight, placing him first on the promotion’s all-time list at 265 pounds. He confronts the undefeated Cyril Gane on the UFC 256 main card.

103: Significant strikes by which Gane has outlanded his three UFC opponents. The French kickboxer has connected with 174 such strikes inside the Octagon while absorbing only 71 in return from Raphael Pessoa, Don'Tale Mayes and Tanner Bosser.

21: Years of age for Chase Hooper. The youngest fighter on the card, he was born on Sept. 13, 1999 in Enumclaw, Washington. M. Night Shyamalan’s blockbuster “The Sixth Sense” was in its sixth week of release at the domestic box office at the time. Hooper takes on Peter Barrett in a preliminary featherweight pairing.

.792: Cumulative winning percentage between the 22 fighters scheduled to compete at UFC 256. They own a combined record of 350-89-3. Oliveira holds the most wins (29) of any fighter on the card, while Daniel Pineda has been saddled with the most losses (13). Pineda tackles Cub Swanson on the undercard. Advertisement
