By The Numbers: Renato Carneiro vs. Benoit St. Denis

Brian KnappSep 26, 2024

Renato Carneiro once again has his work cut out for him.

The American Top Team-trained Brazilian will look to keep his place in the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight line when he confronts Benoit St. Denis in the UFC Fight Night 243 headliner on Saturday at Accor Arena in Paris. Carneiro enters the cage on a three-fight winning streak, lurking just outside the Top 10 at 155 pounds. “Moicano” last competed at UFC 300, where he buried Jalin Turner with elbows and punches in the second round of their April 13 pairing. St. Denis, meanwhile, has rattled off five wins in six outings. However, he finds himself on the rebound following a knockout loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 299 in March. It was St. Denis’ first setback in well over two years.

As Carneiro and St. Denis make final preparations for their forthcoming battle in France, a look at some of the numbers that have accompanied them to this point:

35: Years of age for Carneiro, who was born on May 21, 1989 in Brasilia, Brazil.

10: Carneiro wins by submission, accounting for 53% of his career total (19). All 10 have resulted from rear-naked chokes. Carneiro holds one other win by knockout or technical knockout (5%) and eight more by decision (42%).

44: Seconds needed for Carneiro to put away Damir Hadzovic with a rear-naked choke at UFC Fight Night 170 on March 14, 2020. More than four years later, it remains his fastest finish to date.

58: Rounds started by Carneiro as a professional mixed martial artist. He has gone the distance on 10 different occasions and carries an 8-1-1 record in those bouts.

109: Combined victories between the five men—Rafael dos Anjos, Rafael Fiziev, Chan Sung Jung, Jose Aldo and Brian Ortega—who have beaten Carneiro. They boast a cumulative .736 winning percentage at 109-39.

28: Years of age for St. Denis, who was born in Nimes, France, on Dec. 18, 1995.

9: St. Denis victories by submission, accounting for 69% of his career total (13). His methods of choice: two guillotine chokes, two rear-naked chokes, two arm-triangle chokes, one armbar, one kneebar and one face crank. St. Denis owns four other victories by knockout or technical knockout (31%).

101: Significant strikes landed by St. Denis in his second-round technical knockout of former Resurrection Fighting Alliance titleholder Thiago Moises at UFC Fight Night 226. It established a personal high-water mark for the Frenchman.

6: Consecutive calendar years in which St. Denis has fought at least once. In addition to his 0-1 mark in 2024, he went 4-0 with one no contest in 2019, 2-0 in 2020, 2-1 in 2021, 2-0 in 2022 and 3-0 in 2023.

.757: Cumulative winning percentage between the two men—Poirier and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos—who have defeated St. Denis. They sport a combined record of 54-17-1.
