Sherdog’s Top 10: Silent Killers

3. Robbie Lawler

The reigning UFC welterweight champion has never seemed all that comfortable with the spotlight or the media attention that goes along with it. Lawler has often frustrated reporters with his interviews because he has not offered them much with which to work. He is the quintessential silent assassin, content to appear out of thin air, knock off someone’s block and disappear again into the shadows.

At his heart, Lawler is a frightening knockout artist, the type of fighter no one wants to fight because of how much pain he has inflicted on past opposition: Rory MacDonald, Matt Lindland, Melvin Manhoef, Frank Trigg and many others have been victimized in unsettling fashion. When the UFC cuts pre-fight promos in which fighters speak about their opponents, Lawler’s are always short and oftentimes awkward. Trash talk is not his game. He prefers the hurting side of the hurt business.
