Sherdog’s Top 10: Fighters Worth the Price of Admission

3. Robbie Lawler

The reigning UFC welterweight champion was an explosive, all-or-nothing fighter when he exploded on the scene as a teenager. He was a crude brawler, but murderous punching power more than made up for his lack of polish. Tiki Ghosn and Steve Berger were among Lawler’s first victims inside the Octagon.

The “Ruthless” one also engaged in unforgettable battles with Aaron Riley and Nick Diaz, but when he parted ways with the UFC in 2004, uncertainty surrounded his career. He built on profile in Pride Fighting Championships, EliteXC and Strikeforce by refining his tools and becoming a more tactical striker. Still, there were times when he reverted back to his old free-swinging self.

Lawler returned to the UFC in 2013 and has gone 8-1 since, his lone defeat a disputed to decision to Johny Hendricks. He avenged that setback, snatched the UFC welterweight crown in the process and along the way electrified millions with his ferocity, heart and crushing knockout power. Lawler has cashed four “Fight of the Night” bonus checks since he returned to the Octagon, and his wars with Hendricks and Rory MacDonald were voted Sherdog.com’s “Fight of the Year” for 2014 and 2015.
