Sherdog’s Top 10: Elbows
No. 3
3. Chris Weidman vs. Mark Munoz
Before Weidman became a household name among MMA fans with his back-to-back triumphs over the legendary Anderson Silva, he was a former wrestler working his way up through the ranks of the UFC’s middleweight division. His last stop along that journey was a headlining matchup with Mark Munoz. It looked to be a competitive fight on paper, with the younger man only a -140 favorite over the former NCAA champion.
Instead of an evenly matched scrap, we got a slaughter. Weidman dominated Munoz from the opening bell, slamming him to the mat, dropping heavy shots from top position and generally beating him like a rented mule. The veteran failed to land a single significant strike during the entire fight, failed to complete a takedown and did not attempt a submission. It was, in effect, a flawless victory for Weidman.
The finish was even more impressive than the aggregate. Munoz wound up on a big right hand, while simultaneously Weidman slipped to his left and cracked him with a counter right elbow right across the face. Munoz dropped, and Weidman pounded him into unconsciousness shortly afterward.
