Chuck Liddell was always the Kryptonite to Tito Ortiz’s Superman.
“The Iceman” paired superb takedown defense with a savage standup game in besting Ortiz at UFC 47 in 2004 and did so again in their rematch. Liddell was at the height of his power at the time and entered the cage on a run of six consecutive finishes, having twice wrecked Randy Couture. Ortiz, meanwhile, sported a five-fight winning streak of his own. Liddell was not impressed, ultimately stopping the Team Punishment founder with punches in the third round. Ortiz has never again recaptured the magic, as he has gone 2-6-1 in nine fights since.
Buoyed by the Liddell-Ortiz rematch, UFC 66 will be remembered as a massive commercial success. It generated a total gate of more than $5 million and a pay-per-view buy rate north of one million.
