Penn makes his second appearance as a purveyor of future scar tissue for his performance against Stevenson. The two met for the vacant lightweight strap at UFC 80, following Penn’s brutal destruction of nemesis Jens Pulver and a coaching appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter.”

As expected, “The Prodigy” was the heavy favorite, and he put it on Stevenson from the opening bell: It took Penn only five seconds to crumple “Daddy” with an uppercut and secure top position. He passed Stevenson’s guard multiple times and beat him up from the mount; and with 30 seconds left in the first round, the Hawaiian postured up and landed a vicious, slicing elbow that opened a faucet-like gash across Stevenson’s forehead.

“Daddy” fought on for another five minutes, but when Penn got his back late in the second and locked in the rear-naked choke, it sent a spurt of blood flying through the air like a stepped-on ketchup packet. The cage was littered with puddles of pooled blood too thick to have soaked into the canvas, and Penn walked away with the belt.
