UFC 162 “Silva vs. Weidman”
July 6, 2013 | Las Vegas
Anderson Silva was going to lose at some point; the great ones always do. But, even with Chris Weidman entering the bout with an unblemished record and a ton of hype, the American was expected to get trounced by “The Spider.” Silva was so dominant as UFC middleweight champion that he was already considered the greatest mixed martial artist to ever walk the earth. Weidman was just going to be another victim in a long list of highlight-reel knockouts.
Silva started off well enough, potshotting his challenger from a distance, but he wasn’t hurting Weidman, who remained calm as the champion began to taunt him. When Weidman wouldn’t budge, Silva became more and more bold with each shimmy and shake.
Silva ate a decent punch and, in typical fashion, clowned Weidman by dropping his gloves and pretending to be hurt. He did this right in front of Weidman, who continued to throw nice, straight punches. Unfortunately for Silva, the follow-up punches were much harder, and The Spider paid the price for goofing off. Silva was knocked out cold, and he lost his precious belt in the process.
