Johnson had retribution on his mind when he faced Burns for the second time in five months at the Palms Casino Resort. Their first meeting ended in controversy, as referee Steve Mazzagatti failed to see an inadvertent third-round eye poke that left Johnson unable to continue at UFC Fight Night 14 in July 2008. There was nothing controversial about the rematch. Burns held his own in the early standup exchanges, only to see Johnson cut him off with takedowns in the first and second rounds; “Rumble” spent more than six of the first 10 minutes in top position, shedding submissions, chewing up clock and feeding Burns ground-and-pound. At the start of the third round, Johnson snapped back the Iowan’s head with a crisp jab, followed it with a left hook and reset. He then sent a perfectly timed head kick crashing into Burns’ jaw that instantly melted him. Referee Mario Yamasaki was on the scene to call for the stoppage 21 seconds into Round 3.
