Edgar went up against Tyson Griffin in an unforgettable battle between two promising undefeated prospects. Griffin had already notched victories against proven competitors like Urijah Faber and Duane Ludwig, while Edgar had quietly plied his trade on the regional circuit across the Northeast.

A back-and-forth affair gave way to a unanimous decision for “The Answer,” who improved to 7-0 in handing Griffin his first defeat. Edgar earned the first of his four “Fight of the Night” bonuses that Saturday night in Las Vegas and went on to become the UFC lightweight champion, upsetting B.J. Penn at UFC 112 in April 2010.

Edgar remains one of the sport’s premier fighters, having downshifted to 145 pounds after back-to-back losses to Benson Henderson. He will face Penn for a third time at “The Ultimate Fighter 19” Finale in July.
