The fate of the UFC light heavyweight championship will be decided when Cormier defends his title against the surging Oezdemir in the co-main event at TD Garden. Cormier returns to the cage for the first time since his brutal knockout loss to archrival Jon Jones at UFC 214 in July. Of course, Jones later tested positive for a performance enhancer, a development that led to Cormier being reinstalled as the undisputed champion at 205 pounds. Nevertheless, the no-contest threw the brakes on his four-fight winning streak. Oezdemir, meanwhile, has come out of nowhere to challenge for UFC gold. The Swiss upstart has gone 3-0 since joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster in February, his unbeaten run highlighted by consecutive sub-minute knockouts of Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa.
