HOOKnSHOOT “Showdown”
July 14, 2001 | Evansville, Ind.
Starting in 1996, the HOOKnSHOOT organization held 68 events and presided over approximately 497 matches in the Midwest. Among those nearly 500 fights was a hidden MMA gem between Edwards and Riley.
Their first meeting was a “Texas Rules” match in which only open-hand strikes were allowed. The second scrap between the two came two years later, with a legitimate amount of hype behind it. Riley and Edwards fought for the promotion’s middleweight belt, and what ensued was pure unadulterated violence. Much like the first meeting, the fight ended in a unanimous decision win for the “Thugjitsu Master,” but the accumulation of damage done to both men is the stuff of regional MMA legend.
