Sherdog’s Top 10: Greatest Entrances

No. 5

5. Mirko Filipovic

Few fighters are more identifiable with a particular walkout song than Filipovic, whose dedication to Duran Duran’s “Wild Boys” has been one of the hallmarks of his career. He has entered the ring or cage to that track for almost every fight during his time in MMA, with a bare few exceptions: He came out to Ennio Morricone’s “Ecstacy of Gold” at UFC 128 but immediately went back to it for his next outing at UFC 137.

For as intimidating a competitor as “Cro Cop” was especially during his prime in Pride, the choice of “Wild Boys” might seem a bit incongruous. At a time when Kazushi Sakuraba went over the top with “Super Mario Brothers” and Anderson Silva was swaying his way to the ring to Michael Jackson, Filipovic was a model of reasonably understated consistency, and he remains so today. Still, few songs can be associated with a single fighter to the extent of “Wild Boys.”

Number 4 » Donning an Afro wig, a brightly colored suit and sunglasses, he sashayed his way to the ring surrounded by a coterie of cornermen/backup dancers with whom he might have a faux shoving match before reaching the ring. This continued even during his time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
