Sherdog’s Top 10: Elbows

5. Dong Hyun Kim vs. John Hathaway
Sherdog.com’s 2014 “Knockout of the Year” was a doozy. Kim had been a reliable grinder for the vast majority of his UFC career but seemed to have reshaped himself into a dedicated purveyor of pressure and violence, beginning with a devastating knockout over Erick Silva.
He carried that same attitude into his fight with Hathaway, a talented but somewhat forgotten Englishman who had notched high-profile wins but whose inability to stay healthy had robbed him of any sort of momentum or real name value. The fight was excellent, a back-and-forth scrap that featured action in every phase, but what made it special was the finish. Shortly after a clinch break, Hathaway looked to land a right elbow as a counter to the left hand Kim had been throwing. Instead, the South Korean stepped outside, spun, and flattened the Englishman with an elbow.
Whether Kim’s transformation into a defensively suspect pressure fighter is good for his career or not, we can all appreciate spinning-elbow knockouts.
