6. Joe Son Rape Conviction

It took over a decade to prove, but in 2008, Son was convicted of crimes related to a 1990 Christmas Eve gang rape. The UFC 4 veteran was in police custody on an unrelated probation violation when he was linked to the rape through a DNA sample he had given. Son was charged with five felony counts of forcible rape, two felony counts of forcible sodomy, two felony counts of sodomy in concert by force, seven counts of forcible oral copulation and one felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force. Bail was set at $1 million, and Son faced 275 years to life in prison.

Original charges were dropped based on the statute of limitations, so Son was instead charged with conspiracy to commit torture and murder -- crimes for which there are no such limitations. He was found guilty of one felony count of torture in relation to the incident. While serving a life sentence, Son made the headlines again in October 2011 when he allegedly beat a cellmate to death. Best remembered in MMA circles for having his groin pummeled by Keith Hackney punches inside the Octagon, he will go on trial for the murder in 2016.
