Sherdog.com Preview: UFC Fight Night 8

Marquardt vs. Lister

Nathan Marquardt (Pictures) vs. Dean Lister (Pictures)

This bout was originally your headliner but the “powers that be” thought otherwise and demoted the match to a swing bout. Nathan Marquardt (Pictures) is 3-0 in the Octagon while Dean Lister (Pictures) sports a 2-0 record. Someone will have earned serious middleweight title consideration with a victory here.

Nate “The Great” is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a second-degree black belt in the Pancrase system. Nathan is a former King of Pancrase and carries a professional MMA record of 24-6-2. He was not only the first middleweight King of Pancrase but also the youngest KOP and won the title in the shortest period of time to date (nine months).

Recently, Marquardt has spent his time preparing for fights with Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In addition to his lengthy Pancrase pedigree, Marquardt was the Bas Rutten (Pictures) Invitational middleweight tournament champion, Ring of Fire middleweight champion and the Rumble in the Rockies tournament champion. Marquardt debuted in the UFC against AMC Pankration fighter Ivan Salaverry (Pictures). The duo fought to a decision and it was a poor performance, especially given the fact they were chosen to be the headliner.

Nate was back at UFC 58 and beat Joe Doerksen (Pictures) by unanimous decision. Last October Marquardt subbed striker Crafton Wallace (Pictures) via rear-naked choke.

Lister is a four-time Machado National Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion, a two-time National Sambo champion and the former KOTC middleweight champion. He is a BJJ black belt and trains at City Boxing in San Diego, Calif., with a record of 9-4-0 in MMA.

Dean is an Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championships veteran and Absolute Division champion (beating Saulo Ribeiro (Pictures), Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz and Marquardt among others).

Lister reportedly signed a six-fight deal with PRIDE and made his debut at PRIDE Bushido 4 against Amar Suloev (Pictures). He lost a decision to the Armenian, but rebounded by scoring a quick submission over longtime PRIDE veteran Akira Shoji (Pictures) in a four-man tournament. Since Paulo Filho (Pictures), the other bracket winner, could not continue, Lister took the tournament and advanced to the Middleweight Grand Prix. He then lost a unanimous decision loss to Ricardo Arona (Pictures) at the PRIDE Total Elimination 2005 card.

Lister would debut in the Octagon at UFC 60, when Dean defeated light heavyweight striker Alessio Sakara (Pictures) by triangle choke in the first round. Dean was back in the cage last August and out-pointed Japanese grappler Yuki Sasaki (Pictures).

I mean no offense to the athletes involved, but this is not the most exciting match-up and that could explain why it was dropped from television. Lister has been far more passive than the “Boogeyman,” who submitted five straight opponents from ’01-’03. Granted the competition has taken a step up, but the grappling superstar has not made the splash into MMA that many thought he would.

As for Marquardt, though has won his last five his Octagon debut haunts all UFC fans that saw it and it is difficult to erase from any bout analysis. Beating Doerksen was big and submitting Wallace, though a less explosive foe than the others, proved Marquardt could finish someone in the Octagon.

Given the fact that Anderson Silva is sporting the gold in the UFC middleweight division right now, these guys should welcome the chance to test themselves against Franklin, Leben or Lutter before meeting the dangerous Brazilian champ.
