Sherdog.com Preview: ROTR Hawaii vs. Japan
Scott Junk vs. Hideki Tadao
Apr 20, 2006
JUNK: Former Hawaii football player Scott Junk (Pictures) carries a professional MMA record
of 1-1. He trains with “Cabbage” Correira and the rest of the
B.J. Penn (Pictures)’s MMAA team.
Junk has numerous underground fights, including bouts at the X-1 Battlegrounds. He was scheduled to face Bobby Hoffman (Pictures) at ROTR 7 but a last-minute change saw Scott face former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez (Pictures). He lasted longer than most expected, fighting until early in the second round, before being submitted with a front choke.
Scott also battled karate fighter Yusuke Fujimoto in the K-1 World
GP in Hawaii. He fought, albeit thoroughly fatigued, into the third
round when he was caught with a right hand on the nose that dropped
him. It allowed Fujimoto to advance to the semifinal of the
tournament. Yusuke fought all the way to the final where Gary Goodridge (Pictures) stopped him in the third round to
become tournament champion.
Junk was scheduled to face Team Tigre fighter Miles Tynanes at the ROTR 8 show, according to early rumors. But he wound up getting the equally dangerous Hawaiian club fighter and X-1 Battleground veteran Vilatonu Fonokalaifi (Pictures). The pair threw heavy leather for several minutes until Junk was able to gain the upper hand and pound out the win with strikes in the first round.
TADAO: Hideki Tadao (Pictures) is 4-5 in MMA. He trains with Shinpei Sotoyama (Pictures), Asato Hashimoto, Takaichi Hirayama, Katsuya Inoue (Pictures), Wataru Miki (Pictures), Hayate Usui (Pictures) and the rest of the Wajiu-tsu Keishu-kai RJW team. His nickname is “Lee Segak.”
Tadao began competing in MMA for the Pancrase organization in 2002. He met Jason Godsey (Pictures) in his debut and was submitted via rear-naked choke in the first round. Three months later he fought veteran Yoshiki Takahashi (Pictures) and lost a decision. He picked up a win in his third attempt, scoring a win over Jun Ishii (Pictures).
Hideki fought three times in 2004. He was stopped by Keigo Takamori in less than two minutes and won a decision over Tsuyoshi Ozawa (Pictures). A visit to Australia and a bout at the X-Plosion Super Fight pitted Hideki against the “Twin Tiger” Mal Foki. He submitted the PRIDE veteran in likely the biggest win of his career thus far.
A return to Pancrase in ’05 saw Hideki fall to strikes at the hands of Ryuta Noji (Pictures). He beat Yuji Sakuragi (Pictures) with a triangle choke last October and was recently knocked out by Hawaiian fighter Poai Suganuma (Pictures) in Pancrase.
MY PICK: Tough call. Junk will have a huge weight advantage (close to 100 pounds) but he doesn’t have a lot of professional experience. If Tadao can weather the early storm a brawler like Junk will bring, he’ll pull out the win. It is a winnable fight for Junk; if he’s in shape, he can finish Tadao. Junk by TKO in the first round.
